Holder Bingham crashes out

Stuart Bingham: Beaten in first round

Defending champion Stuart Bingham crashed out of the Australian Goldfields Open in the first round after losing 5-4 to Matthew Selt.

Bingham, ranked no 12 in the world, twice led his all-Essex battle only to be defeated in a tense decider to set up a meeting with Ryan Day.There was also a shock for World Championship finalist Ali Carter who went out 5-3 to China's Cao Yupeng.Cao raced into a 4-0 lead, aided by a 99 break, and although Carter used all of his experience to claw back some of the deficit he could not stop the young Chinese player setting up a second-round meeting with either Martin Gould or former world champion Ken Doherty."I didn't think the game went that well for me really," Carter told worldsnooker.com. "It's the same old story, I don't really enjoy the travelling to be honest so I've got to have a serious look at my schedule because the first two tournaments for me, this and Wuxi, were a waste of time in terms of my results."It's disappointing to come all this way to lose but I haven't put any practice in, I've been travelling non-stop and I haven't really played since the World Championship. So that performance summed it up really."Shaun Murphy won his first ranking event match in nearly six months when he beat Marcus Campbell 5-4, while there were also wins for Marco Fu, recently crowned Six Reds champion Mark Davis and Peter Ebdon.Tuesday results:1st rd: Shaun Murphy (Eng) bt Marcus Campbell (Sco) 5-4, Marco Fu (Hkg) bt Joe Perry (Eng) 5-1, Cao Yupeng (Chn) bt Ali Carter (Eng) 5-3, Mark Davis (Eng) bt Jack Lisowski (Eng) 5-2, Matthew Selt (Eng) bt Stuart Bingham (Eng) 5-4, Peter Ebdon (Eng) bt Michael Holt (Eng) 5-4
