Matthew Selt pulled off the biggest result of the second day of the tournament by beating defending champion and fellow Essex professional Stuart Bingham 5-4 to set up a second round match against Ryan Day.

Romford's Selt reached his first ranking event quarter-final last year in this event beating John Higgins and Stephen Hendry on route but since then he failed to reach the same stage of any of events.

Bingham has won two smaller events already this season and was the man in-form coming in to this tournament but either player failed to get going throughout which was summed up by a high break of only 74 by Bingham.

From leading 2-0 early on Selt had his back against the wall as Bingham took a 4-3 lead after a series of scrappy frames. Selt forced the decider and two small contributitions helped him send Bingham home with a 5-4 win.

The other big result from day 2 was from the man from China who reached the last 16 of the Crucible on his debut a few months back, Cao Yupeng. He performed superbly in patches to defeat the two-times world finalist Ali Carter 5-3.

Cao raced to a 4-0 lead before being pipped back by Essex's Carter to 4-3. In the 8th frame Carter had a chance to bring the match to a decider but missing a black off the spot letting Cao back in to finish the match 5-3 to continue his brilliant start as life as a professional snooker player.

2005 world champion Shaun Murphy faced a scare earlier as he saw his 4-1 lead pipped back to 4-4 by Marcus Campbell before coming through the decider to set up a second round match with Tom Ford. The player who recently beat Murphy to win the 6-Reds world title Mark Davis also recorded a good win, 5-2 over Jack Lisowski.

Marco Fu got his Australian Open campaign off to a good start with a 5-1 win over higher ranked Joe Perry and last season's China Open champion Peter Ebdon saw off a fightback from 4-2 up by Michael Holt to come through the decider to win 5-4.
