Peter Ebdon came out on top in a deciding frame to see off Ross Muir 6-5 in a see-saw opening round clash at the UK Championship in York.
Muir made a break of 85 in the second frame to go 2-0 ahead, only for the 2002 world champion to take the next two and level things up.
The pair then swapped frames but at 5-5, Ebdon - who had won the fourth frame thanks to a run of 73 - struck the crucial blow to avoid an early upset in the tournament.
There were no such problems for Graeme Dott, another former world champion, as he eased to a 6-2 triumph over Alexander Ursenbacher 6-2. He had at one stage opened up a 4-0 lead over his Swiss opponent.
World number five Barry Hawkins also made serene progress, cruising to a 6-1 victory over Ashley Carty, while Norwegian Kurt Maflin beat Chris Norbury by the same score.
Robert Milkins didn't drop a frame as he recorded a 6-0 win over Scotland's Michael Leslie, though Judd Trump had the easiest afternoon of the lot as he was handed a walkover against China's Rouzi Maimaiti.
Nigel Bond's 132 in the fourth frame gave him a 4-0 lead against Stuart Carrington as he went on to record a 6-3 result and Marcus Campbell was a 6-4 winner in an all-Scottish battle against Scott Donaldson.
