Defending champion Mike Dechaine joined an impressive full field of 128 at the $25,000-added Turning Stone Classic XX, held at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, NY, January 10-13. The first round is finished and the elimination rounds have begun.

Stellar Field Gathers for Turning Stone XX Billiards Event

Defending champion Mike Dechaine joined an impressive full field of 128 at the $25,000-added Turning Stone Classic XX, held at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, NY, January 10-13. The first round is finished and the elimination rounds have begun.

All the members of the USA’s Mosconi Cup team are present. Dechaine defeated Jay Plonski 9-6 and will move on to face Victor Conte, just off a 9-3 win over Ed San Soucie. Johnny Archer bested Bob Cunningham 9-2 in the first round and next faces Manny Chau, who won his first-round match over Brian Lipes 9-5. InsidePOOL Magazine’s 2012 Player of the Year, Shane Van Boening, whitewashed David Mills 9-0. Dennis “The Hatchetman” Hatch delivered Tony Antone to the one-loss side 9-2 and next faces Mark Creamer. The team’s rookie, Brandon Shuff, fought to double-hill against Adam Kielar in the first round and was sent west 9-8.

This event usually attracts players from all over the world, and the twentieth installment is no different. Corey Harper came all the way from Los Angeles to compete and defeated Jesse Piercey in the first round 9-7. Another West Coast young gun, Oscar Dominguez, handily won 9-6 over Ed Culhane in the first round. Warren Kiamco of the Philippines, always a force to reckon with, bested Rob Stackowski 9-1 and will play Lionel Rivera in the next round. England’s Jayson Shaw routed Tom Gildea in the first round 9-2 to face Roger Miller. Ohio’s Chris Szuter trounced David Ascolese 9-2 in his first match and faces Nelson Oliveira next.

Six ladies showed up to fight for their place in the field, including Borana Andoni, Brittany Bryant, Jennifer Barretta, and Karen Corr. Corr took her first match over Bruce Carroll 9-6, and Barretta dominated Kathryn Fairchild 9-2. Bryant fought to the hill with her first opponent, Jerome Rockwell, but was sent west 9-8 and eliminated in the next round by Earl Herring 9-5. Andoni also had a narrow 9-7 loss in the first round to Darrick Deperto 9-7.
