This video demonstrates the three basic pool strokes. They are the follow stroke, the stop stroke, and the draw stroke. These different strokes allow you to position the cue ball where you want on the table, so you continue to have shots to shoot at.

The follow shot is hit above the horizontal center of the cue ball. It causes the cue ball to roll forward and follow the object ball after the hit.

The stop shot is hit at dead center, and causes the cue ball to stop on the spot where it contacts the object ball.

The draw shot is hit below the horizontal center of the cue ball. It causes the cue ball to spin backwards, which makes it go in reverse when it hits the object ball.
