Van Boening Defeats Archer for Turning Stone Billiards Title

Shane Van Boening, InsidePOOL Magazine’s 2012 Player of the Year, pulled off his first big win of the new year, winning the Turning Stone Classic XX and earning $8,000. The $25,000-added event was hosted by the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, NY, and produced by Mike Zuglan of the Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour.

Eight players of the original 128 returned for Sunday’s matches. Van Boening dealt Warren Kiamco of the Philippines a donut to advance to the hot seat match. His opponent there was fellow Mosconi Cup teammate Johnny Archer, who had just bested recent BCA Hall of Fame inductee Karen Corr 9-4. Archer took an early lead 7-3, but Van Boening fought back to make it a hill-hill affair before Archer pulled off the double-hill win.
Former world 9-ball champion Thorsten Hohmann escaped his own hill-hill bout against Jayson Shaw, relegating the Scottish player to seventh place. Tying with Shaw, Dennis Hatch’s pursuit of the Turning Stone title was thwarted again, this time by Mike Dechaine, who defeated him 9-3.
Dechaine went on to eliminate Kiamco in fifth place in close match that ended in his favor 9-7, as Corr also fell to Hohmann 9-5. In the quarterfinal match, the score seesawed back and forth, but at 5-all, Hohmann took charge of the match and was able to send the defending champ home in fourth place 9-7.

Hohmann held an early lead in the semifinals over Van Boening, but soon “The South Kid” climbed back and knotted the score at 6-all. He then took the lead and went on to win the match 9-6 to earn a rematch with Archer in the finals.
Van Boening drew first blood in the extended race-to-13 final match, but Archer won the next two, and from there the score went back and forth until 3-all. At that point Van Boening charged forward, only allowing Archer two more racks before he claimed the match and title 13-5.
