Neil Robertson was the toast of Sheffield yesterday as he became the first overseas player for 27 years to book his place in the Betfred.com World Championship final.

The Aussie potter clinched an impressive 17-12 victory over Ali Carter, the 2008 finalist.

Not since Canadian cueman Cliff Thorburn competed in the 1983 Crucible final has an overseas player progressed to the decider of snooker's premier tournament.

And if Robertson did happen to go all the way at this year's £1.1million event, the 28-year-old would become only the second ever player from outside the UK and Ireland to win the crown.

Thorburn won in 1980. Carter made sure the match went to a final session by winning an important frame to trail 16-12 at the interval.

However, victory was not long in coming following the resumption as Robertson held his nerve under pressure to win the next frame and secured a fine victory.
